Satisfied or Settling? How To Assess Your Seven Life Facets - Andrea Liebross

Satisfied or Settling? How To Assess Your Seven Life Facets

When you make plans to go on a trip, you must know your current location, where you’re going, and the route you plan to take. Planning for the next destination in your life and business is no different.

Part of helping my clients is sitting down and looking at the facts of their situations so we can get a sense of where they are. This process can reveal a lot — not just about the facts, but about what they are thinking and feeling.

Unfortunately, if your thoughts and feelings are getting in the way of the facts, it’s easy to remain stuck behind the mental blocks that are keeping you from achieving your desired results

It’s like in the movie National Lampoon’s European Vacation when the family gets stuck on a roundabout. They just keep driving in circles because they can’t get over to the exit lane. Something always gets in their way. Each time around the circle, the dad tries to point out the scenery to stay positive. But after the 55th time, it’s not really exciting anymore.

The value of a strategic pause

To get off the roundabout, you need data. From there, you can make better decisions based on facts instead of decisions based on your feelings or your gut. Making time to gather this data is what I call a strategic pause and it often happens naturally when clients engage in coaching because they’re finally giving themselves some margin and space on their calendars to think.

One of the best things you can do during a strategic pause is to take a self-assessment of your seven life facets. We often substitute our own opinions or assumptions for facts without even realizing it. But when we create space to assess our Seven Life Facets, the true facts are revealed and we now have access to the data we need to make decisions, streamline our processes, and function more effectively.

What are the seven life facets?

Before beginning a self-assessment, you first need to be prepared to think critically about these seven facets of your life and business:

  1. Time
  2. Systems and Processes
  3. Relationships
  4. Finances
  5. Business
  6. Health and Wellness
  7. Recreation

How to assess your Seven Life Facets

Now it’s time to pull the curtain back on how you’re feeling and your level of satisfaction in all facets of life. Assess your current level of satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 10 in each of these Seven Life Facets. A 10 would be “Amazing; nothing needs to change. I am really happy where I’m at.” A 1 would be “Horrible; I don’t even want to think about that area of life.”

  1. How are you using your time?

Do you feel like you never have enough time? Or plenty of time? Are you using your time on the things that are most important to you? Does your use of time align with your priorities?

  1. Do you have systems and processes in both your personal life and your business/professional life?

If you have systems, do you use them? Are they working for you? Do they make things easier and more efficient? Or do you follow them for a week and then forget about them for a while?

  1. What do your relationships look like?

Your relationship with yourself and your relationship with other people — friends, family, colleagues, and your team? Who are you spending your time with? And is that someone you want to be spending time with? Do you give the people you care about enough time?

  1. How do you feel about your finances?

Do you cringe every time you look at your bank account? Do you worry about saving for retirement? Do you wish you had a budget? And if you do have a budget, do you follow it?

  1. What is your level of satisfaction with your business?

Is it giving you what you want it to give you? Does it become consuming? Or are you able to separate it from your own identity? Do you still enjoy being a business owner? Are you having fun?

  1. What is your level of satisfaction with your own health and wellness?

Do you move your body? Do you get enough sleep? Are you eating the food that fuels your body?

  1. How do you spend your free time?

Do you have free time? Do you have interests or vocational pursuits or hobbies that aren’t related to your work or your family? Do you still play?

Determine your current location

I’m guessing you didn’t give yourself a 10 in every category. There’s probably a smattering of 4s and 6s and 8s. Maybe even a 5.5 or a 1.

For every Life Facet that isn’t a 10, ask yourself, “What would have to change in order for me to give a 10 to this facet?” What is THE ONE problem? Is there one? Should you spend more time on this facet? Change the way you think about things? Readjust your expectations? Probably all of those things. Examine each facet and write down what you need to make it a 10.

Now, look at each Life Facet again. What’s at stake if you don’t get it to a 10? What is it costing you being where you’re right now in that category? Write that down, too.
